The current farm bill, which was signed in December 2018, expired at the end of the fiscal year on September 30th. On Tuesday, United States Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) signaled that an extension of the current farm bill is probably more likely than agreement on a new five-year farm bill.

Grassley says that a one-year, or two-year extension of the current farm bill looks more likely at this point. The extension would ensure safety nets for farmers but would have a downside says Grassley.

Grassley says that while partisan bickering has been on display recently in Washington D.C during the spending bill negotiations, the farm bill process should be viewed in a different light.

Senator Grassley made his comments Tuesday during a weekly ag conference call with broadcasters and reporters.
