Hinson talks EATS Act and Farm Bill at ISF

The Iowa State Fair is one of the best exhibitions of the state’s agriculture, so, naturally, our state legislators are out as well to represent our various commodity groups. Iowa Congresswoman Ashley Hinson stopped by the IARN tent outside of the cattle barn to talk about this year’s visit and, of course, what legislation she’s working on. As far as the fair is concerned, though, there’s one thing that comes to mind- and that’s all of the different foods from our producers!

Hinson said Iowa agriculture is on full display here at the state fair, and that’s increasingly important as families become more and more removed from the farm.

Congress is currently on recess, but once they get back, Hinson said she’ll continue to push for the EATS Act to be on the farm bill.

Hinson said the EATS Act will uphold the commerce clause to keep Prop 12 from regulating interstate commerce.

Opposition to the EATS Act has raised concerns about the potential for unintended consequences, but Hinson said the EATS Act is intended to maintain options in swine production while also keeping pork affordable for low-income consumers.

Plus, if we’re talking about unintended consequences, Hinson said Prop 12 will severely impact the affordability of pork for low-income families and retailers.

Hinson also provided a look into what’s in store for her office in the coming months as well as what she’s doing while on recess.
