Throughout the Midwest and the Corn Belt corn root worms are known as “the billion dollar pest.” Here in the state of Iowa corn root worms live up to that moniker by robbing yields through damaging corn roots each growing season. And it doesn’t help that Iowa has the ideal conditions for corn root worms to thrive.

That is Kurt Maertens with BASF. He says that mild winters have been compounding problems with corn root worms.

Because of the prevalence of both northern and western corn root worms and their ability to thrive in Iowa’s soils, it begs the question. Should all of Iowa’s corn farmers be scouting for corn root worm regularly?

Maertens says that BASF now offers a new insecticide called Nurizma, which contains a new mode of action for corn root worm control.
