“Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. -Matthew 14:29
If Jesus told you to come would you? I would love to say confidently that I would. Peter did!
Jesus appeared on the water, and called Peter to come and join him out on the sea.
Peter stood up, and stepped out onto the water. Peter didn’t just walk on water, he walked on waves. I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty impressed by this.
When Peter saw the winds he grew afraid and began to sink. Immediately Jesus reached out and rescued Him.
Then, Jesus called Peter out on his doubting. Jesus wasn’t being mean here. He just wanted to know why Peter was so worried, when Jesus was right there.
It can be easy to criticize Peter for being that close to Jesus and doubting.
However, don?t judge Peter for sinking while you?re sitting safely in your boat.
It’s easy to have faith when we are safely in the boat, when the wind is gone and the stars are out. But can we trust Jesus in the midst of the storm? That’s when we need him most!
Jesus reminds us here that we have no reason to doubt because He is with us.
One moment you are in a storm and are terrified and confused. But then the next you are suddenly somehow where you wanted to be. You didn’t think you were going to make it, but you held on and God got you through.
Just like Jesus called Peter to come, he calls for you to do the same thing.
Step out of your boat, trust the living and faithful God.
Prayer: “God, thank you for calling out for your children to step out in faith. Help me to step out of my boat and trust in you. In your name I pray, Amen.”
