Rain and cooler weather finally made its way to Iowa

After one of the driest Mays on record and a dry end to June, July has finally brought some relieving rains to the state of Iowa. There was also some storm damage that came along with it, but the moisture was very much appreciated. However, Iowa State Climatologist Dr. Justin Glisan said that there?s still a lot of work to be done on the drought conditions.

Early this month, a derecho tore through a good chunk of the Corn Belt. Fortunately, Glisan said Iowa didn?t see much of the derecho-level damage.

And even with the corn that did get damaged by storms, Glisan said the weather and other favorable conditions have allowed the crops to stand back up.

It?s not time to sit back and relax yet, though. Glisan said we?re going to need a lot of timely rain events to combat our current moisture deficits.

Now that we?re officially in El Nino as well, Glisan said it looks like the rest of this year should see cooler and wetter weather patterns.
