It feels like this crop season just started, and it?s already been a challenging one. Continued drought conditions have been the main issue so far. DEKALB Asgrow technical agronomist Andrew Penney provided an update on the current crop conditions in Iowa.
While it?s not widespread yet, Penney said some farmers have been making changes to their soil management practices, and, at the very least, it?s coming up more in conversations.
It may be pretty obvious, but Penney said the main thing we need moving forward is consistent rain, not the spotty showers we?ve been seeing lately.
Penney also provided an update on the status of disease and pest issues across the state. While they may not be the main focus right now, it?s still important to keep an eye on them.
Despite all of these issues, Penney said that timely rains have been able to pull us through drought conditions and deliver a decent crop in years past.
