From helping control the spread of rabies to preparing for and responding to foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks, Boehringer Ingelheim Veterinary Public Health (VPH) plays an important role in the U.S. and across the globe. Dr. Doug Ensley, director of VPH, explained how they work to prevent foreign animal disease (FAD) outbreaks.

While FMD hasn?t been an issue in the U.S. for almost 100 years, that doesn?t mean it?s no longer a threat. Dr. Ensley said that you can look at its effects on other parts of the world to see why this is a disease that we need to take seriously.

Of course, the reason why we don?t have issues with FMD here in the U.S. is because we take prevention very seriously.

Dr. Ensley they keep a close eye on what strains they need to prepare for in the vaccine bank.

The VPH business also closely monitors the status of rabies. Dr. Ensley added that, while rabies doesn?t affect pigs, it does affect people, so they make sure to keep track of rabies outbreaks as well.

Dr. Ensley also provided some advice for producers to use to manage FADs in their swine herds.
