At the 35th annual World Pork Expo, many familiar topics are at the forefront of discussion- Prop 12, WOTUS, and input costs, just to name a few. But there?s no better time or place to have these discussions than at the World Pork Expo, where pork industry leaders gather to network and talk about policy and everything else pork related. National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) CEO Bryan Humphreys said he?s really enjoyed watching the pork industry grow and change through the World Pork Expo.
Humphreys said that high input costs are one of the primary issues that pork producers are facing right now.
There are many issues with Prop 12, but one of the reasons it was passed is because the voters in California just aren?t educated enough on the pork industry. Humphreys said that advocacy has been and will continue to be one of the primary methods of combating misinformation about pork.
The Prop 12 changes are not backed by science- instead, Humphreys said that this is an effort from extremists to exert pressure on the swine industry.
Humphreys said that, while the Supreme Court?s Prop 12 decision was disappointing, they did agree that something needs to be done. However, that change needs to happen through Congress.
Fortunately, the World Pork Expo itself provides a great opportunity for some pork industry advocacy.
Humphreys added that the NPPC is also working on many other issues besides Prop 12.
