Timely rains have been popping up around the state, but there?s still some drought creeping in. Iowa State Climatologist Dr. Justin Glisan provided an update on the latest U.S. Drought Monitor.
The recent storms and showers have been nice, but you have to be lucky to see any rain from them since they barely move at all. Glisan said this is why drought concerns are increasing, and there?s a chance for rapid onset drought in eastern Iowa and into the eastern Corn Belt.
With the increasing dryness, many producers have been wondering where that El Nino rain is. Glisan said that more consistent rain should be in the forecast soon, though, and El Nino should help bring some more rain during the growing season.
Glisan added that the jetstream in Iowa has been displaced, which is why the isolated storms have been so static. However, there?s a storm front coming that should bring some nice winds as well.
