Yesterday, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) held a public hearing on the proposed Renewable Fuel Standards rule for 2023, 2024, and 2025. While the ethanol numbers provided relief to the renewable fuels industry, the biodiesel volumes were disappointing news. Iowa Biodiesel Board Executive Director Grant Kimberley said the proposed numbers for biodiesel do not reflect the growth the industry is going through.
Kimberley said that the state of Iowa has invested heavily in the soy crush industry in particular, and, if the EPA goes through with its proposed rules, those investment projects may get put on hold.
As a top soy producer, Kimberley said that Iowans are well aware of the potential that biodiesel and the soybean crush holds.
Kimberley said there was a several hundred-million-gallon difference between what the industry wanted to see and what the EPA proposed.
Kimberley added that the biofuels industry is very important to Iowa?s economy, so he hopes to see changes made to those proposals.
