May 27th marked the start of the fundraising effort for this year?s Governor?s Charity Steer Show (GCSS), and, with this year marking the 40th anniversary of the event, the competition has never been stiffer. Recently, there?s been a bit of a rivalry between Governor Kim Reynolds and Ag Secretary Mike Naig. Reynolds even made sure to call him out during her remarks from the opening ceremony to make sure he brings his A-game. I had the chance to speak with Governor Reynolds after the event, and she talked about how excited she is for this year?s show and how she thinks they?ll achieve their fundraising goals this year.
One of the most impressive things about the GCSS is the fact that such a huge collaborative effort has continued for 40 years. Reynolds said she thinks it is a great example of the values and ethics of Iowa?s beef industry, especially with how professional the young exhibitors are.
The kickoff event came at a great time, as it was at the end of May Beef Month. Reynolds said the whole charity effort is a great way to highlight one of Iowa?s most important industries.
I also had the chance to chat with Secretary Naig. Much like Governor Reynolds, Naig thinks the show is a great way to have fun raising money for an amazing cause that highlights the morals we have in the state of Iowa.
Over 50,000 families have been supported by the funds raised through the GCSS, and many of them turn around and look for ways to give back once they are done as well. Naig said that, especially with the struggles we?ve seen in recent years, it?s a great example of just how much Iowa?s ag industry cares.
Naig said he also hopes that this perseverance through difficult times can help people gain a better appreciation for where their food comes from.
With Governor Reynolds? callout, Naig said he?s ready to polish up his showing skills and compete with her in the show ring at this year?s Iowa State Fair.
