The National Pork Board is asking producers to take safety precautions when applying manure this spring.

Marguerite Tan, NPB Director of Environmental Programs, says manure is a valuable nutrient source for crops and an important component of the pork industry?s sustainability story. She talks about some safety reminders.

Tan says entry protocols must be in place for confined spaces.

Tan adds producers and manure handling contractors should assume their pit contains these four hazardous gases: hydrogen sulfide, methane, ammonia and carbon dioxide.
