The year ahead will very different year than 2012 for the corn crop, according to Dr. Charles Hurburgh at Iowa State University.
Hurburgh says the lack of a full soil moisture profile will put pressure on crops sooner. Whereas last year’s corn crop avoided serious drought stress until midway through summer, Hurburgh says this year’s crop would begin the year with higher chances for mold and toxin issues. Additionally, he doubts overall high-quality grain, pointing to last year’s high test weights and protein content, which won’t be as prevalent this year due to less water at planting.
