To a new farmer, acquiring farmland without any prior family connections or in-roads to get started can be difficult. The barrier to entry as a new farmer can be quite daunting. Farmland and farm equipment can be very expensive and difficult to acquire for a farmer who is just starting out.
Nicole Howell is an Agricultural Development Program Specialist with the Iowa Finance Authority and she says the Beginning Farmer Loan Program through IFA can help new farmers acquire their own land.
New farmers can receive help on down payments through the program as well as in conjunction with a Farm Service Agency (FSA) loan.
Howell says that the IFA can also help lenders to reduce their interest rates.
