On Saturday, Exile Brewing held a release party for its ?Born Here, Brewed Here – Volume One: Rye IPA? beer which was made in tandem with the Iowa Agriculture Water Alliance in hopes of bringing attention to water quality and soil health.
The beer was brewed with ingredients that were all grown on Iowa farms. Exile brewing in partnership with the Iowa Agriculture Water Alliance hoped to create the beer with a specific focus on regenerative agriculture.
Iowa-grown rye and barley, small grains that help to protect water quality and prevent erosion, are the stars of the new brew.
The rye for the beer was grown on a Northeast Iowa farm.
That?s Mike Bretz a farmer from Coggon Iowa. Bretz says that his rye thrived in the NE Iowa soil.
Bretz says that typically malted rye provides a spice to beer, but his bushels of rye have added a sweet flavor to the Rye IPA.
Eric Miller, another NE Iowa farmer and owner of Miller Malting Company in Cascade, grew the barley used in the beer. Exile also used hops grown on Iowa farms in the making of the special edition brew.
Sean McMahon, Executive Director of the Iowa Agriculture Water Alliance, says that this beer can put a focus on ways that water quality and soil health can be improved.
McMahon says producers have made big strides to help to care for their land to use fertilizer more efficiently.
Exile Brewing is donating $5 for every case sold to the IAWA which will in turn use that money on water quality improvement projects in Iowa.
