When we look at investing in the marketplace for American soybeans, we often like to look at the flashy stories. The additives for road sealers, the biodiesels, tire additives, motor oil, and so much more. We are constantly building up the uses and demand for soy oil, but what about the soy meal that is the biproduct? What about the livestock industry that feeds soy products? What about the message being put in front of consumers? There?s a lot that goes into the messages that you see from the Soy Checkoff.
The United Soybean Board (USB) met in Little Rock, Arkansas for their February board meeting. They looked at how they are using the farmers? dollars and how they can take a dollar bill from a farmer and give them a ten or a twenty-dollar bill back.
USB Board member Tom Oswald of Cleghorn, Iowa was in Little Rock for those meetings and talked about the discussions they had. He said the new mission statement of the USB and the Soy Checkoff is about adding value.
Oswald says that the USB looks at the Soy Checkoff in terms of research and promotion. He explains how these are viewed and gives us some examples.
Oswald adds that the word ?promotion? sounds easy, but there are a lot of little things that make up that big picture.
