This week is Soil and Water Conservation Week in Iowa, and, as we?ve talked about several times recently on here, wetlands are a major part of the state?s conservation strategy. At the recent wetland event out at the DMACC Dallas County Farm, Liz Ripley, conservation and cover crop outreach specialist with Iowa Learning Farms, explained how water quality wetlands work.
Ripley also talked about how they decide what areas are suitable for new wetlands.
Wetlands aren?t the only in-field conservation method we use, though. Ripley said farmers also use bioreactors and explained how they work as well.
Between all of the different conservation practices, Ripley said there?s a method that will fit any farm.
Ripley also pointed out that May is National Wetlands Month, so they will be putting out informational webinars every week.
