Egg farmers across America are teaming up to feed families ahead of spring celebrations as part of a nationwide initiative led by the American Egg Board called Fighting Hunger by the Dozens. Versova is one of more than 20 farms participating in the initiative, which will provide more than 5.5 million eggs to food insecure individuals and families. Yesterday, Versova made a local donation of 108,000 eggs to the Food Bank of Iowa. Ross Dean, senior vice president of Versova and member of the Food Bank of Iowa?s board of directors, said similar donations will be taking place across the country.

Avian influenza has caused the price of eggs to go up, which has led to a shortage of eggs in food pantries. Even so, Dean said it is important to make sure that everyone has access to a nutrient-dense protein like eggs.

Dean said that, with the spread of Avian influenza, their farmers are doing everything they can to keep their birds safe.

On top of being a nutrient-dense protein, eggs are also versatile and easy to prepare, which is another reason why food banks have such a demand for them.

Dean also encouraged everyone to take advantage of this opportunity and volunteer their time to help those who are less fortunate.

Dean added that Versova will continue to make regular egg donations throughout the year.
