The U.S. Meat Export Federation says sustainability is an issue of growing importance to international customers of U.S. red meat and other key global audiences.
Cheyenne McEndaffer ? USMEF director of export services ? explains that the focus on sustainability has recently heightened due to events such as the upcoming United Nations Food Systems Summit, and the US rejoining the Paris Climate Accords.
?We really see this as an opportunity to get ahead of the game and start talking about the really good things we are doing throughout the meat and livestock supply chain on the sustainability front,? said McEndaffer. ?This is really pertinent now because not only do we have customers in different countries asking what US cattle and pork producers doing, but also because we have a lot of international interest for events like the Food Systems Summit in September.?
McEndaffer says the U.S. industry emphasizes its unique ability to produce beef and pork using fewer resources and locally produced feedstuffs. These attributes allow for very efficient production of meat while generating lower emissions and a reduced impact on the environment.
