If you purchased eggs throughout 2024 you are well aware of the climbing price of eggs over the course of the year. Eggs are up in price on average 7.7% compared to last year.
Unfortunately, those prices are not expected to decline in 2025.
That is USDA economist, Megan Sweitzer who says that the main culprit for higher prices is bird flu. Bird flu has led to a lower number of egg laying hens and a decrease in egg production.
If outbreaks subside, Sweitzer says prices could decline. However, the most likely outcome is a continued increase in egg prices.
2024 finally saw an easing in rising food costs compared to the years immediately following the Covid pandemic. Sweitzer says the shocks to the food supply chain were substantial.
