Tassel wrap issues originate from seed genetics

One of the biggest crop issues this year was tassel wrap, which severely limited the ability of affected corn plants from pollinating. This issue is also unique in that it isn’t caused by a pest or disease- tassel wrap is actually a genetic issue. As a result, some seed varieties were able to avoid most of these complications. Jeff Sernett, Bayer Crop Science agronomy solutions lead based in Iowa, explained how exactly tassel wrap affected this year’s crops.

Sernett said the Bayer genetic breeding process helps protect DEKALB corn from facing this issue.

Sernett said they specifically look for genetic synchronization between the silks and the tassels, as this makes the plant more prepared to handle issues with tassel wrap and even environmental complications.
