On this Veterans Day, take a moment to think of the veterans who may be living in less fortunate conditions. Nearly 1.5 million veterans in the U.S. are living below the federal poverty level, and veterans living in poverty are at higher risk than nonveterans for food insecurity, homelessness, and other hardships. In order to fight this problem, the Food Bank of Iowa provides food for monthly veteran mobile food distributions in Des Moines and Ottumwa. Pat Sweeney, executive director of Polk County Veteran Affairs, said they give out food every second Tuesday of the month.
Sweeney said they are very dedicated to their cause- in fact, they’ve only missed one month for distribution over the past five years.
Sweeney said these distribution events are much more than just a mobile food pantry. Every month, they now have an opportunity to check up and connect with area veterans, some of whom might have difficulties asking for and seeking help.
