Smithfield Foods, Inc. launched a new environmental initiative. The company launched Smithfield Renewables. It?s a new platform to accelerate the company?s industry-leading carbon reduction and renewable energy efforts.

Kraig Westerbeek will serve as Senior Director of Smithfield Renewables and Hog Production Division Environmental Affairs.

?Smithfield has long led the industry in sustainability and its environmental commitments,? said Kraig Westerbeek senior director of. ?Smithfield Renewables will ensure we continue to lead in this arena by further sharpening our focus on programs that help us reduce our carbon footprint and recycle energy more efficiently.?

In this new role, he will report to Smithfield?s chief sustainability officer, he will lead and oversee greenhouse gas reduction efforts, keeping the company responsible for achieving its goals.

Smithfield Renewables will ensure the company meets its environmental commitments including its goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25 percent by 2025.
