Climate change is something that has been talked about for decades. The discussion has come to envelop production agriculture and its roll in the environment. On one side you have environmentalists shouting Ag is hurting our environment. On the other, you have farmers who need to protect the environment if they are to be successful in the future.
Senate Ag Committee Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS) opened the discussion by cautioning how any steps taken do not have damaging effects on farmers & ranchers and the food supply chain.
Committee Ranking Member Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) said farmers stand to be uniquely affected by climate change. However, she said farmers are also in a unique position to help, and many are already doing that.
Stabenow reminded attendees that farmers have risen to environmental challenges before, especially during the dust bowl. She stated farmers don?t need government in their way, they need bi-partisan support to continue the work they have already started and advance it forward.
Tomorrow, we will hear from the Kansas rancher who testified at the hearing.
