Harvest is well underway here in Iowa. Farmers are hitting the fields and getting the crops out while the weather is extremely cooperative. With no real rains in the forecast and warmer temperatures; it should hopefully make for a smooth harvest season. We know when the weather cooperates, harvest doesn’t take very long.
Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig farms in Northern Iowa, and he talks about just getting into the fields himself. The Secretary commented that many farmers on his trade trip to India were practically heading to the combine after landing in Iowa.
Safety is paramount all year long on the farm, but this time of year it becomes a primary focus. Being safe around bins and equipment is a big issue, but so is being aware of the dry conditions we are seeing around the state. Field and combine fires can happen quickly under these conditions.
Please be patient when you encounter machinery on the road. This equipment needs extra room to maneuver and travels at slow speeds.
