In the spring of 2023, several midwestern states and their governors wrote a letter to the United States Environmental Protection Agency asking for a solution to secure year-round access to E15 for consumers in their states. In April of 2023 the EPA issued an emergency E15 waiver for the summer driving season.
That is Geoff Cooper, president and CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association. He says that the EPA has signaled that it is working on a final decision, but that time is running short.
He says even if the eight midwestern states that petitioned the EPA receive an answer on year-round E15, the rest of the country would still need a nationwide solution regarding E15 and its availability at the pump.
When asked about the long-term outlook for ethanol demand, Cooper says that the influx of electric cars on the roadway could make a dent in demand. However, he also says that the biofuels industry is hoping to expand into non-traditional markets that could greatly raise demand for biofuels.
