Protecting pigs and people from the flu

The industry has managed different strains of influenza for a long time, specifically H3N2 and H1N1. Influenza A (H5N1) is not in the U.S. swine herd, although it has been recently detected in livestock and humans. Dr. Heather Fowler, director of producer and public health at the National Pork Board, said there are a few symptoms to watch for.

Fortunately, there are simple things people can do to keep pigs and people from getting sick.

Fowler added that pork producers should think hard about getting a flu shot.
