Thursday was day number three of the World Food Prize ? Norman Borlaug International Dialogue at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. The dialogue is a series of speeches, presentations, and roundtable discussions from policymakers, scientists, farmers, and students focused on the future of agriculture and food security.
This year?s theme of the Borlaug International Dialogue is Feeding a Fragile World. After facing a global pandemic, numerous extreme weather events, and war in Ukraine the world?s producers have been asked to continue to provide food for the world?s population under a lot of duress.
That is Michael Michener, Deputy Assistant Administrator Bureau for Resilience and Food Security with the U.S. Agency for International Development.
Michener says that in an interconnected world, global events like the war in Ukraine make everyone feel the ripple effects. That includes farmers in the United States Midwest and Iowa.
He says that USAID is focused on some specific areas of the globe that need aid very urgently.
The Borlaug International Dialogue runs through Friday. Pulitzer Prize-winning author, former US Ambassador to the UN and current administrator at USAID, Samantha Power, delivered a keynote speech on day two of Borlaug Dialogue.
