The National Pork Board and the National Pork Producers Council are providing hands-on experiences and exclusive opportunities to learn about the NPB and NPPC while growing leadership skills. Pork Leadership Institute is a joint effort inviting producers and industry professionals to travel, train, and volunteer their time.
Courtney Knupp, vice president of international market development for National Pork Board, said the yearlong program offers a lot of learning opportunities, including being exposed to the international market space. This exposure can help inform future funding decisions for the industry.
?As we look towards 2023, the pork board projects, and our work, about 23 percent will be in international marketing,? Knupp said. ?And so, it’s really important for them to have exposure, and there’s no better way to get exposure than boots on the ground and seeing it in person.?
Knupp, who also participated in the program ten years ago, said it was great to take this year?s class to their final session in Mexico City.
?They got to see the importance of market access with NPPC, and market promotion investment with the National Pork Board, and our partners us Meat Export Federation,? Knupp said. ?We met with importers who are just thrilled about our products, we were able to tour traditional wet markets, and more modern retail store and food service.?
Knupp added that producers and industry allies who are interested in the PLI program need to start by reaching out at the state level.
?I would definitely encourage you to check with your state organization and coordinate with them,? Knupp said. ?State pork associations all have different approaches and operate a little bit differently, but they’ll be your biggest resource and one knowing that you’re interested in being more involved, because if it’s not PLI, there are ton of opportunities for all producers and people in our industry to get involved in.?
The deadline to apply for the Pork Leadership Institute is November 17.
