Pork industry continues to improve animal welfare

Animals are a large investment and risk for producers. It can be a high reward if the markets and demand hold. Like crops, producers do all they can to protect their investment. You needn’t look any further than what has happened with the Pure Prairie Poultry mess to see that producers are serious about the well-being of their animals, even though we know that the result is that the animals will be harvested.

In the pork industry, the pork checkoff helps support the promotion and welfare of animals. Stephanie Wetter, director of animal welfare for the National Pork Board, talks about a couple of programs that are in place to guide the industry in several important areas.

Despite being distinct entities, PQA Plus includes a site assessment element that complements the Common Swine Industry Audit.

Both PQA Plus and CSIA hold recognition both nationally and internationally.
