After the end of the main holiday season, many food banks see a drop in donations. But in a time when many of those food banks are in limbo due to a lack of USDA funding, donations need to keep coming in. It was great to see an annual donation continue its tradition, as the Murphy Foundation and Fareway teamed up for another year of springtime meal packing. Mike Murphy said they have greatly enjoyed the opportunity to partner up with Fareway and provide some meals for food-insecure Iowans.
The Murphy Foundation has contributed $465,000 to the Food Bank of Iowa since 2021, most of which has gone towards this annual project. The springtime meal kits are themed around Easter and contain foods like ham, au gratin potatoes, and even brownie mix for dessert. Murphy said the team at Fareway does a great job of selecting nutritious and delicious foods to donate.
On top of being able to contribute to a great cause, Murphy said his family just enjoys having the chance to give back.
The 2,000 meal kits that were built on Thursday will be distributed to families facing food insecurity through 10 of the Food Bank of Iowa’s Des Moines Public School pantries. For more information, visit foodbankiowa.org.
