After experiencing an already wet month in June, history would suggest that July would back off on the faucets a little bit. That was not the case this year, though, as Iowa experienced the second wettest July on record. Dr. Justin Glisan, state climatologist for Iowa, said this year’s totals were twice as high as what we would expect from July.
The storms we saw throughout July caused varying rainfall totals across the state, so some areas have had record-high amounts of rain. Glisan noted that the severe weather risk was lower than usual in July.
The sheer amount of rain has made it to where there is very little drought across the state as well.
