The new year has started, and there is no shortage of insights into what might happen in the 2025 U.S. growing season. Farmers make their decisions based on the markets and the outlook for their crops and livestock. That being said, we are in a situation that has many farmers thinking hard about their acres this year.
Soybeans have a supply glut, and the prices haven’t had the best few weeks. I realize that as I write this, the price has a sharp upward move, but it hasn’t been sustained yet. South American projections are also complicating the situation as well. Brazil has been looking to have a bumper crop of beans as well, and as they are the world leader in soybean production, we can expect that a successful growing season will put further pressure on the markets.
This is why it seems that corn may be the choice for more U.S. acres this coming year. Agriculture Economist Ben Brown says that the markets are showing corn to be the safer bet this year.
However, we still must consider the old crop supplies and Brown puts in his two cents.
Producers are encouraged to look at their situation as soon as possible, so they can determine what will make the best economic sense for the operation. However, just because you have time, doesn’t mean you should wait too long.
Of course, many factors can change, and the South American crop isn’t in the bin yet.
