Iowa?s Region 2 crop update

The weather in Iowa is notorious for hardly ever being on the farmers side when it comes to all things planting and harvesting. While a few counties are facing drought, most of the state seems to be in good shape for crop development.

As some of the state is dealing with flooding fields and what seems like never drying land, that isn?t the case for Northwest into Northcentral Iowa. Iowa State University Extension Field Agronomist for Region 2, Gentry Sorenson talks about how his Region of Iowa is really needing that rain to help those crops.

Although the Northwest into the Northcentral part of the state is experiencing drought in certain areas, it wasn?t always like that. Sorenson mentions the cool and wet rains in April set many farmers back in their planting schedules.

With disease season right around the corner in the month of July, disease management is one of the most important times to stay in control and take those extra measures to prevent all those unwanted pests and diseases in your fields. Sorenson talks about a few of those that are starting to take a toll and making their presence known on farmers? fields in his area.

There are many steps you can take to keep your field in the best shape possible. Sorenson notes some things you need to keep an eye on and continuously be checking for, to achieve the best results. One area he mentions is the post application for Dicamba soybean deadline has expired, so if late pests or insects show, there are always other routes to take in the types of herbicides to put on your fields.
