When it comes to how we can do things better in our farming operations, we are always learning. That is a constant across every generation that has farmed your land. We are always learning how to do things better, more efficiently, and more cost-effectively. Research is the biggest key to unlocking all our potential for our farm’s productivity, and now it’s environmental responsibility.
It is more than just trying to save money when it comes to putting on fertilizers and maintaining your nitrogen levels. We are also not wanting to overuse products that are not only costly but also bad for our land and water. That is why groups like the Iowa Nitrogen Initiative are working to find out how we can do a better job with our inputs.
Dr. Michael Castellano is with Iowa State University and the Iowa Nitrogen Initiative, and he tells us what the organization is working towards with their studies.
They are looking for more partners in their studies for this fall and the upcoming 2025 growing season. The requirements are basic, and there’s no extra work that you have to do.
Dr. Castellano says it is important not only for farmers to have the data they need to make better decisions, it is also beneficial to be able to be transparent with the general public. This way they can see that we are working to be responsible and efficient, but that not every acre has a one-size-fits-all solution.
