As part of the Sack Hunger campaign, the Iowa Egg Council donated 14,100 dozen eggs to the Food Bank of Iowa today. The timing of the donation is also important, as May 1st marks the beginning of Egg Month. Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig said it’s a great example of the many ways that farmers meet the needs of people across the state.
Iowa Egg Council Executive Director Kevin Stiles said Egg Month is a fantastic time to recognize the egg farmers themselves as well as the products they produce.
It’s easy to take for granted how available eggs are in the state of Iowa. Food Bank of Iowa CEO Michelle Book said eggs are versatile and packed full of vital nutrients, which makes them perfect for families who might be struggling to make ends meet.
Book added that it’s not just unemployed people who might need the help of a food pantry- many parents work several jobs and are still unable to afford quality food due to the lack of a livable wage.
