We have been discussing this for almost a year now. The impending ban by the Mexican government on GMO corn from the United States. The two countries have been negotiating, and even saw the Mexican government postpone the ban another year, but that is about as far as the two sides have gotten.
Yesterday, the Senate Ag Committee had a Farm bill hearing to talk about food and horticulture titles in the bill. Newly appointed USDA Undersecretary for Trade & Foreign Ag Affairs Alexis Taylor was one of those in attendance. As expected, she faced questions from fellow Iowans about the future of our corn exports.
Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley questioned Undersecretary Taylor, asking if there were any plans for the Biden Administration to open dispute settlements under the USMCA agreement. Taylor said that this is still an ongoing situation.
Taylor has only been on the job for a few weeks, and she has already been to Mexico to work on a solution.
Senator Grassley asked for a timetable on when we could see action one way or another. Taylor responded by saying that we are still actively engaged and don?t want to go down the dispute settlement road until all options are exhausted.
