IDALS opens Cover Crop Insurance program sign up Dec 1st

Iowa has been working hard to set an example to other states as a leader in nutrient reduction in the soil and water. Farmers are doing what they can to use more eco-friendly practices intended to do a better job of protecting our resources. Even though much has been accomplished, there is still more to do. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) has no intention of resting on its laurels. It plans to continue incentivizing these kinds of practices in the hope of attracting more farmers to things like cover crops.

To that end, IDALS is reopening the sign-up period for cover crop acres to be enrolled in a program that allows producers to get a $5 per acre discount on their crop insurance for every acre of cover crops they are planting. Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig talks about the program opening up tomorrow, December 1st.

The program has been a huge success. Other states and even the Federal Government have used this model for their programs.

Naig talks about how this program offers versatility for farmers, both in finding incentives for their acres that may not be covered by other programs and in ease of use for producers.
