The National Pork Board is using Pork Checkoff funds to try and persuade consumers to opt for a different ground meat at the grocery store.
The National Pork Board initially partnered with Michigan-based grocer Meijer grocery store, and was able to open a new avenue for ground pork to make it into consumer?s shopping carts. Neal Hull, National Pork Board director of domestic market development, says the partnership helped the NPB to meet goals that it set for ground pork in 2020.
Hull says that the success seen in Michigan-Meijer stores can become a playbook for the rest of the country.
This is not the first time that ground pork has been a focus for the NPB. However, Hull says this time the National Pork Board is providing more pork options because that is what consumers are telling them with their shopping habits.
Ground pork consumption is well ahead of 2019 levels by roughly 34%. Visit porkcheckoff.org for results of the market development work, and pork.org for recipes.
