The Governor?s Charity Steer Show will return this year, and they?ve reached yet another milestone, with 2022 marking the 40th anniversary of the charity event. The opening ceremony will take place this Friday, and both the Iowa Cattlemen?s Association (ICA) and the Iowa Beef Industry Council (IBIC) couldn?t be more excited to kickoff this landmark year.
IBIC?s Casey Anderson is the manager of the Governor?s Charity Steer Show. She talked about the opening ceremony and what we can all expect from the show this year.
Behind the scenes, there are a lot of moving parts when it comes to recruiting the celebrity showmen and the families who will provide the steers. While each sponsor has their own selection process, Anderson said their primary focus is selecting participants who represent the values of Iowa?s beef industry.
Since we?re still getting through planting season, there hasn?t been much word on who is showing this year yet. However, Anderson said they already have one extra-special celebrity showman this year: Former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, who was key in getting this program started in 1983.
This Friday?s ceremony will take place at the Des Moines Ronald McDonald House at 10AM. Anderson said they will be focusing on May Beef Month, the program?s 40th anniversary, and all of the people who have helped out along the way.
All proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa, with houses in Des Moines, Iowa City, and Sioux City. Since 1983, the Iowa Governor?s Charity Steer Show has raised over $4.5 million for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa. During that same time, nearly 50,000 Iowa families have been served. Additionally, another 8,000 families coming from all 50 states and more than 60 foreign countries have used the Iowa facilities.
