It may be hard to believe that we are only a few weeks removed from frigid temperatures and snowstorms that came across the state. Farmers know that weather conditions like this are hard on livestock and orchard operations. The Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Iowa is reminding producers that there is help available to recover from any damage you incurred from the winter blasts.

Samantha Sherwood is a Program Specialist for the Farm Service Agency in Iowa. She talked with me about some of the options available for producers. The first is the Livestock Indemnity Program.

Another program is the Livestock Assistance Program. This differs from the Livestock Indemnity Program because it also includes losses for honey bees and farm-raised fish.

Another crop we don?t always think about when we talk about Iowa agriculture are the annual crops, like fruits and Nursery or Christmas trees. There is assistance for these producers as well through the Tree Assistance Program.

The clock is ticking on filing those claims. If you have any questions or want to get the ball rolling, contact your local Farm Service Agency Office. With COVID-19 protocols in place, Sherwood reminds producers to call ahead.
