Focusing on conservation at the Iowa State Fair. It’s the theme for the Iowa Farm Bureau Booth this year, recognizing leaders in conservation along with outstanding practices. It’s an ongoing effort to minimize tillage and maximize efficiency and Iowa Farm Bureau President Brent Johnson says their proud to contribute as a theme to their State Fair presence this year.
“Generations of conservation so not only are Iowa farmers known world wide for corn production, swine production, ethanol, biodiesel, so many good stories there on the production side of things. We’re also the world leaders in so many different conservation practices. Saturated Buffers, cover crops, conservation tillage, waterways, there are so many categories where Iowa producers are leaders in production style. So not only are we producing the best, we are also doing it in a way that is environmentally significant to me sure we are taking care of our natural resources and continuing what generations have done before us.”
He says the evolution has really been remarkable.
“You know when I was a kid, my Grandpa would put me in a tractor with a plow. My Grandpa, my Dad and myself would go around and around in circles in the same field turning the field black because that’s what a good farmer did back then. Just the natural progression of practices, being efficient, doing better, learning more and technology improvements allows us to make huge strides every year. So here today we are with strip tillage, no tillage, variable rate technology, putting the right inputs at the right place at the right time at the right rate.”
