Cool and dry fall impacted by Hurricane Helene

It’s officially fall now, and the temperatures have chosen to represent that. It’s been mostly cooler mornings and mild temperatures across the state. Justin Glisan, state climatologist for Iowa, said that the month of September as a whole has been slightly warmer than average, but recent temperatures have been noticeably cooler.

Down in Florida, a powerful hurricane has made landfall. Even though it’s all the way down south, Glisan said that Hurricane Helene is drawing in so much moisture that it will be dry here in Iowa for a while.

We’ll want to see that moisture return here soon, though. While dry conditions are nice for harvest, Glisan said we usually see around four inches of moisture over the months of October and November, which replenishes the soil moisture profile before it freezes.
