Longshoremen at ports along the East and Gulf Coasts are set to strike when their current labor contract expires at midnight tonight. U.S. Meat Export Federation Vice President for Economic Analysis Erin Borror said a shutdown will have a significant economic impact on the U.S. meat and livestock industries.

Borror said this comes at a time of year when shipments are usually increasing.

Borror added that the shutdown will impact many smaller businesses serving specific markets overseas, as these are routes that do not have economically viable shipping alternatives.
