Basic principles of PRRS control are still effective at preventing outbreaks

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) can have a devastating economic effect on the swine industry, whether that?s locally or nationally. New strains of the virus often create concern among both producers and veterinarians, but time and time again, the basic principles of PRRS control have been proven to be an effective way to protect swine herds. Dr. John Waddell, director of key account veterinarians for swine at Boehringer Ingelheim, explained what those three principles are and how they help prevent infections.

While the core principles of PRRS haven?t changed for a long time, that?s because the swine industry had to change dramatically to overcome the virus and prevent it from wreaking havoc again. Dr. Waddell said part of that strategy includes containing the virus to keep it from spreading in the first place.

Of course, biosecurity isn?t the only way to prevent a PRRS outbreak. Dr. Waddell said there?s a modified live vaccine that?s been around for 25 years now, and it?s also a proven method of preventing the spread of PRRS.

Dr. Waddell also explained the importance of vaccine immunogenicity in the context of PRRS control.

The journey to make a vaccine is often long and arduous, and that holds true for the PRRS vaccine. Dr. Waddell talked about some of the history of the vaccine and the work that went in to getting it approved.

Making these changes to your swine heard may seem daunting, but it?s incredibly important to work on preventing a PRRS outbreak. Dr. Waddell said the best way to start and maintain a prevention plan is to talk with your herd veterinarian.
