INTERVIEW: Dave Hoy, LG Seeds Sales Agronomist
A local agronomist wants farmers to get the most return per acre this growing season.
Dave Hoy, LG Seeds sales agronomist for northeast Iowa, tells IARN that when it comes to maximizing yield potential, it all starts with seed selection.
?So many different hybrids out there have unique qualities that separate them from other hybrids,? said Hoy. ?Knowing where those hybrids go and what types of soils or situations they marry up to is going to be paramount to getting the most out of every acre.?
Hoy discusses tips on selecting seed treatment.
?Seed treatment is huge, especially as we move forward because we see that we?re probably going to have a wetter spring than last year,? said Hoy. ?When we get wetter springs, we have more opportunity for diseases. If you have seed treatment, or if you want to upgrade that seed treatment, there?s still time. That?s going to help out tremendously.?
Hoy says other agronomic issues to be mindful of for the growing season include seeding depth, spacing, and planting to soil moisture.
?My ask is to make sure you get out of that planter, even as you go across the field,? said Hoy. ?Those down pressures change and vary. Make sure we get a minimum of an inch and a half deep in the soil. I?d rather see it at two inches deep than one inch deep. That would solve a lot of the problems that we have.?
