Farmers who are on the fence about reducing nitrogen applications might want to consider enrolling in the Practical Farmers of Iowa’s N Rate Risk Protection Program. The program is designed to help farmers reduce their input costs while also protecting the local environment. Chelsea Ferrie, field crops viability coordinator with the Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI), said farmers can receive a $35 per acre payment in the event of a yield loss occurring due to a reduction in nitrogen.
Ferrie said there are a few basic requirements for farmers to enroll in this program.
Ferrie said the team of agronomists at PFI will help farmers figure out their ideal nitrogen reduction rate.
Applications are open now through April 30th. Ferrie said there’s no penalty for dropping out of the program if things need to change during the season.
