Iowa has led the way in securing year-round access to E-15 for eight midwestern states, but the fight isn’t over—we must continue pushing to make it permanent nationwide. Expanding E-15 access across the country strengthens our rural economy, lowers fuel costs, and reduces carbon emissions. By advocating for federal action, Iowa can ensure that American drivers and farmers alike reap the full benefits of homegrown biofuels year-round.
Nathan Hohnstein is Policy Director for the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association. He talks about why it is important to get this policy changed across the nationwide possibility. Iowa is the largest ethanol producer in the country, and Iowa needs to have the marketplace open year-round.
Hohnstein reiterates that this isn’t about a mandate that everyone needs to use the fuel, it’s just a request to allow market access for another choice.
He adds that an increase in availability leads to an increase in demand. That means more demand for corn that is produced in this country.
Ensuring year-round nationwide access to E-15 is not just about expanding fuel options—it’s about strengthening our economy, supporting farmers, and giving consumers more choices at the pump. Iowa has led the charge, but continued advocacy is crucial to making this a lasting reality nationwide. We can secure a stronger future for biofuels, rural communities, and American agriculture by pushing for federal action.
