As the combines are put away, the tillage is finished, and the fertilizers are being applied, we see the 2024 harvest ending in Iowa. On my travels to Kansas City, I only passed one cornfield still standing. It marks a harvest in which Mother Nature had a rare moment of cooperation. For the most part, fields stayed dry and allowed farmers to just keep plugging along. However, at the end of the season, she decided to add some moisture to the mix. That did slow the ending down just a bit and has put a few farmers behind the 8-ball when it comes to the last few tasks of the year.
As we near Thanksgiving, Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig looks back at the year that has passed and is thankful for such a smooth end to a turbulent year. He talks about all of the things that farms are doing right now, beyond wrapping up harvest.
As the weather toyed with us, we saw a little more of a rush to get anhydrous in the ground. Secretary Naig talks about those challenges.
Is there a real concern that some applications have to be put off until the spring? According to Secretary Naig it is a bridge we will likely have to cross in some places, but it is not the end of the world.
We will have more from Secretary Naig in the coming days.
