Many producers are rightfully worried about managing cattle diseases from infecting their herds, but there is another part of disease management that sometimes gets overlooked- stress management. When cattle are stressed, they have a tougher time fighting off those diseases that they might end up catching, no matter how minor those diseases might be. David Shirbroun, professional services veterinarian with Boehringer Ingelheim, talked about how stress can directly affect cattle herd health.
Shirbroun said cattle are creatures of habit, so if you notice that they aren’t following their usual routine, that’s a sign of excessive stress.
While it isn’t possible to completely prevent cattle from becoming stressed, Shirbroun said that the basic principles of animal husbandry go a long way in preventing cattle from getting too stressed in the first place.
